Recently my daughter tacked a message on her wall. It said "A good friend will tell you more positive than negative about yourself." When I read it, I immediately looked to her and told her that "A good friend will tell you the truth."
I remember a line in the movie "A Few Good Men." Tom Cruise's character was pushing Jack Nicholas's character to answer a question. He pushed him so hard to tell the truth that Jack's character shouted out "You can't handle the truth!"
I think that statement holds true for most of us. We want people to tell us what we want to hear. We really don't want to know the truth about ourselves. To use an old phrase - the truth hurts. It is like looking into a mirror and seeing a blemish on your face. I believe that is why a lot of us don't study the Bible on a regular basis like we should. The Bible is the Living Word of God that is meant to be a mirror used to expose our imperfections.
We do quick checks in the mirror, but we don't dwell there long enough to notice the important things that we need to change. We fear staring in the mirror too long because the longer we are there, the more things we find that are out of place.
We should have someone in our lives that we allow to tell us the complete truth; Whatever that truth is. A good friend will always tell you the truth. If someone is always telling you what you want to hear, maybe they are not as good a friend as you think they are.
The best friend we could ever have is Jesus Christ. He will always tell us the truth.
It wasn't til Abraham believed the truth of God that he was called a friend of God.
James 2:23 (NASB)
and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “ And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God.
God Bless You
