The Power of The Word

First I would like to apologize for not coming back w/ Part 2 of “In My Father’s House.” I will get to that when I feel my words are right for it. However, I was presented with a topic on my ride into to work yesterday morning.

I was listening to a satellite talk radio show on 128 - The Power. Its topic dealt with the fact that several states were trying to institutionalize lower standard of performance for Black and Hispanic students than that of their White and Asian counterparts. The message given was that it is OK for Black and Hispanic students to stay at a lower level, educationally, than White and Asian students. Given that the Black and Hispanic communities are two of the largest growing “minority” groups in America and will soon possibly be the new “majority,” I could not help but think back to slavery.

Back then slave owners and those that worked with slave owners did everything they could to keep slaves from learning how to read. Why would they do this? Slave owners understood that there is power in the written word. Once a slave learned how to read and comprehend what he/she read, they were considered a danger to the status quo. If it were found out that they could read, they would be quickly dealt with in a very public manner to deter any other slaves from learning how to read.

Slave owners new that slaves out numbered them by great proportions. The slave owners understood that the mind was the real battle ground for keeping slaves “in their place.” Those slaves who were brave enough to defy the system understood that there was amazing power in the written word. Through understanding the written word, they were able to see things that they never would have seen if they did not know how to read. They were able to intercept plans and pass on information to other slaves. They were also able to better organize and devise counter measures to help the abolitionists cause.

Likewise as Christians, we should understand that there is power in the inspired written word of God. His word gives us the power to see truth in the midst of lies. John 1:1 tells us that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Then it goes on the say in verse 14 that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Word is Jesus Christ!

There is amazing power in the written word of God.

Never allow yourselves to accept mediocrity or institutionalized lower standards. When you do this you give up power that is attached to the knowledge you would have gained from the written word. You tell the world that it is OK to look down on you because you see your own self as less than.

Rise to the challenge and continue to strive for the highest standards. Realize that there is power in the written word. More specifically, there is immense power in the written word of God. Get to know it and you get to know Him who inspired the word.

God Bless you.
