Am I Looking To The Right Person For Spiritual Mentorship?

If I am a babe in Christ and I connect myself with a local Church, how do I know that I am getting proper spiritual guidance from the right person? In this day and age of mega churches, we have to rely on those other than the Pastor for personal advice and guidance. The Pastor is not always as accessible as He is in a smaller congregation.

You join a church. You begin to study, work and grow. You reach out to someone who has been a member at that church longer than you and you mimic what they do. I do realize that studying the Word is not always an easy thing, especially when you are new to the faith. You pray and ask God for clarity as you study the Word. As you seek out someone within the body to help you find that clarity, you must also pray to God that He would give you guidance and discernment about the person whom you have reached out to for advice. Just because someone has been in the church for a long time, does not mean they are the right person to mentor you. You first have to watch how they live their life within the body. How do they treat people when no one else is looking? Are they more positive or negative in their speech? Do they look for God’s wisdom in their decision making? These are questions that you should be able to answer if you sit back quietly and just watch. I have been told that the life of the believer is the only Gospel some people have ever read. After you have watched, you pray some more and ask God to reveal any unseen issues with that person that might not make them a good spiritual mentor for you.

2 Timothy 2:2 – You have heard me teach many things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses…

Jesus told his disciples to not only listen to what He said, but confirm those things with people they could trust who have first hand knowledge of Him.

Don’t just follow. Let God guide you while you study to show yourself approved.

God Bless you and Happy Father's Day.
