The decisions we make now can affect our lives for a very long time to come. It’s a sad commentary when we fail to see the possible damage that a wrong decision could have on our lives. Young people everyday make decisions that they know in their heart is wrong, but because it feels good they do it anyway. Hold on, that’s us older people too! What will it take for us who say love God to take a step back and really look at the consequences of our actions beforehand?
Proverbs 1:7 – Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline.
We all behave like “fools” at times. Most of us can probably remember our parents telling us not to do something and outlining very explicitly what would happen if we chose to disobey them. Some of us can probably even remember making a choice to be disobedient anyway. We decided to have fun first and endure whatever punishment awaited us later. When it came time to accept our punishment most of us regretted ever making the decision to be disobedient in the first place. If our parents disciplined us “right,” the next time it came for us to make that same choice, we made the right one. I look at it like this; the first time that we received punishment for making the wrong choice our parents placed in us a fear. It was not only an anticipation of fear, but knowledge of why we should fear. That’s what God does to us. He warns us first and allows us the opportunity to make our own decisions. What we do after He warns us is on us – discipline included.
A lot of our bad decisions revolve around us gaining more of the world. God tells us in Proverbs 16:26 – And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?
We must be aware of what kind of fruit our decisions will bring forth. We must seek to produce good fruit and not bad fruit.
Galatians 5:22-23 – But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Out of all of the fruit previously listed, self-control is probably a big one when it comes to our decision making. We have to condition ourselves to make the right choices. The more we make the right choices the easier it will become to continue to do so and vise versa. The more we make bad choices, the more apt we will be to continue to make bad choices.
Let’s all agree to practice making good choices this week and see what kind of fruit we can produce.
God Bless you.
